I was had the opportunity of working with Olga Hernandez and Daryl Auclair in sharing the benefits of Urban Zen Integrative Therapy with their Weight Loss Surgery Community. Prior to meeting, I was eager to develop some holistic techniques that anyone could use pre and post weight loss surgery. I had some time to work with Olga who has received one WLS on 12/23/2013 over a four years ago and was eagerly awaiting her second surgery.
In an interview with Olga, I shared some of the ways Urban Zen Integrative Therapy can be used pre and post surgery to reduce some of the common symptoms of associated with weight loss surgery and plastic surgery. Pre surgery, Olga was very anxious, lots of fears regarding the surgery with her family and her body. We focused on several relaxation techniques including breathwork, essential oils and basic movements. Daryl also participated in the session to provide a focus of her attention so she was able to relax.

Post surgery, she was experiencing insomnia, constipation, and major swelling. I had her work with some essential oils including ginger and peppermint for the swelling. For the constipation, we worked with a bunch of basic movements in the feet and legs to stimulate the movement of the bowels. For insomnia, I instructed several meditation focusing on the pain and allowing the mind to be filled with loving-kindness.

All of our sessions were conducted over facetime and a copy the session was recorded so these techniques could be used at a later time. I am truly fortunate and grateful to work with Olga and Daryl. They are both amazing humans dedicated to helping others!

Some comments from Daryl:
Olga had the Vertical Gastric Sleeve (VSG) on December 26 2013. This is the only weight loss surgery she has had. Most people only go thru weight loss surgery once in their lifetime, unless they need a revision. She was 405lbs pre-weight loss surgery.
After losing over 175lbs as a result of the VSG, she was left with a large amount of excess skin. The extra skin hanging from her body caused her many problems both physically and mentally, and prevented her from moving forward. The only way to alleviate this is to have plastic surgery.
She had her first round of plastic surgery on April 28, 2017. She had a brachioplasty (arm lift), breast reconstruction and torsoplasty. Her second round of plastic surgery was on October 28, 2017, and she had a lower body lift and revision to her first brachioplasty to remove additional skin.
Your help during her second round of plastic surgery has been monumental to her recovery Jason!
